If you are reading this article, I can guess that you suffer from painful night leg cramps .

I’m sure that you have probably purchased a few different medications that promise to put an end to your leg cramps, and you have probably read countless amounts of information about how to prevent the cramps as well.
The first thing that I noticed while doing my research is that the cause is unknown. There are a few different circumstances that are suspected to lead towards nocturnal leg cramps, but nothing is set in stone. This tells me that there can not possibly be an effective medication out there, if they cant even figure out what causes the cramping in the first place!

Don’t worry, I don’t think your spouse will get jealous… just slide a bar of soap under your sheets at the foot of your bed, and prepare for a full nights rest! The very first time that I put this bar of soap under my bed, I did not wake up once with night leg cramps!

Muscle relaxants are effective in the management of low back pain. However, the side effects require that they should be used with caution.
Cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride has the most recent and largest clinical trials demonstrating its benefit, but carisoprodol, diazepam and metaxalone also appear to be effective.

In 1989 researches compared the effectiveness of cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) alone with diflunisal (Dolobid), placebo, and a combination of cyclobenzaprine and diflunisal in the treatment of acute low back pain and spasm. During the ten-day study period, the combined treatment group demonstrated significantly superior improvements in global ratings on day four, but not on day two or seven. This study suggested some effectiveness of combined analgesic and muscle relaxant therapy when utilized early in the initial week of pain onset.
Another study compared the effects of combined cyclobenzaprine and naproxen (Naprosyn) with naproxen alone and also found combination therapy to be superior in reducing tenderness, spasm, and range of motion in patients with low back pain and spasm.
Pain relief for cramps and muscle spasm
Cyclobenzaprine and carisoprodol were compared in the treatment of patients with acute thoracolumbar pain and spasm rated moderate to severe and of no longer than seven days duration. Both drugs were effective, without significant differences between the treatment groups. Significant improvements were noted in physician rated mobility and in patients’ visual analogue scores on follow up days four and eight. While 60% of patients experienced side effects in the form of drowsiness or fatigue, these differences were not significantly different between treatment groups and only eight percent of patients from each group discontinued treatment.
In an attempt to determine the mechanism of action of carisoprodol in the treatment of low back pain, a study was carried out comparing its effectiveness to that of a sedative medication butabarbital, and a placebo. Carisoprodol was significantly more effective in providing both pain relief and improvements in range of motion. The results of this study suggest that the effects of carisoprodol are not secondary to its sedative effects alone. In addition to the skeletal muscle-relaxing effects, carisoprodol also produces weak anticholinergic, antipyretic, and analgesic effects.

In an earlier study, diazepam (Valium) was found to offer no significant subjective or objective benefit, when compared to placebo, in patients treated for low back pain. Carisoprodol (Soma) was found to be superior to diazepam in the treatment of patients with “at least moderately severe” low back pain and spasm of no longer than seven days duration. In this study, the overall incidence of adverse reactions was higher in the diazepam treated group but was not of statistical significance.

- Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables whole grains, nuts and seeds, beans and pulses and unrefined cold presses vegetable or seed oils. These foods will provide you with a range of nutrients that will assist in calming your muscles and nervous system so that the cramping is reduced. They will also assist the body to remove toxins.
- Treat any constipation (which will aggravate cramping) by adding plenty of fibre to your diet, drinking plenty of water and getting plenty of exercise.
- Avoid fatty meats, processed fats and fried foods. These foods add to your body’s toxicity.
- Avoid additives and preservatives as far as possible, as these are also major contributors to the body’s toxic load.

Relaxation and exercise
Menstrual cramps can cause tension and anxiety which in turn make the pain worse. Exercise and relaxation are able to break this cycle. Exercise will also increase the blood flow to all areas of the body including the uterus. Choose the relaxation and exercise which appeals to you. You might like walking, gardening, meditating, deep breathing, massage or yoga. Hypnosis for relaxation and sleep is good too.
The following exercises will be useful as they direct the blood flow to the pelvic region. Use them, particularly, when you are in pain.
- Lie flat on your back, bring your knees up to your chest and clasp them with your arms. Maintain this position for a few minutes. You can leave one leg on the floor and bring the other leg up if that is more comfortable.
- Kneel down and stretch your head and arms out along the floor in front of you with your head between your arms and your elbows and forehead on the floor. Stay there for a few minutes.
- Lie on your back with your legs in the air and rest for a few minutes. You can rest your legs against a wall if this is more comfortable.
Vitamin, mineral and other nutrient supplements
The following nutritional supplements will assist with increasing blood flow and decreasing the actual cramping. They are: calcium, magnesium, essential fatty acids (in evening primrose oil), edible linseed oil, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, Vitamin E and zinc. These can be obtained in a good multivitamin and mineral supplement.
Herbal muscle relaxants
Black cohosh, black haw, chasteberry, dong quai, evening primrose, kava and raspberry are herbs that are used to treat menstrual cramps. Other herbs that are also traditionally used are passionflower, yarrow and yucca. These herbs have plenty antispasmodic compounds that relieve muscle spasms and therefore also can serve to relieve cramping. Many of these work whether used internally or externally. So you can use them as a herbal tea, add them to a baths or both. You can also use the essential oils from some of these herbs and rub these into your abdomen.
- Wild yam, blue cohosh, cramp bark, black haw, and motherwort help to relax tension in the uterus and cervix.
- Garlic, cayenne pepper, ginger, rosemary and ginkgo biloba can be used as a circulatory tonic to ensure that you are getting sufficient blood flow to all areas including the pelvis.
- Skullcap, lemon balm, chamomile, lavender, or vervain can be used where there is general tension and stress. You can add hormonal balancing herbs such as chaste tree or false unicorn root.
Herbal mixtures
Two herbal mixtures that will help calm menstrual cramping are as follows:
1. This liniment is applied to sooth muscle tension and relieve menstrual cramps. All of the herbal ingredients have anti-spasmodic agents.

- 2 parts lemongrass
- 2 parts lemon balm
- 2 parts eucalyptus
- 2 parts lemon thyme
- 1 part oregano
- 1 part rosemary
- 1 part thyme
- Olive oil or unscented massage oil.
In an appropriately sized bowl combine the herbs and sufficient oil to cover them. Allow this to stand over night. The next day strain out the herbs.
Massage the oil onto your abdomen and any other areas of muscle tension. You can use the oil at room temperature or slightly warmed if you wish.
2. You can get relief by drinking by taking a tea that is rich in a compound called borneol. Borneol is a muscle relaxing spasmolytic compound. Cardamon is one of the best sources and this is followed by sage, rosemary and mountain mint.
Use any combination of the following herbs:

- cardamon
- coriander
- mountain mint
- rosemary
- sage
- savory
- thyme
- lemongrass
- 1 cup of water
Combine the herbs of your choice and add the lemon grass for a lemony flavour.
Place 1 teaspoonful of your combined herbs into a cup of freshly boiled water. Allow this to stand for 10 minutes and then strain out the herbs.
Allow this to cool slightly and drink. You can use this up to three times per day.
Menstrual cramping is problem for many women but there are many things that you can do to overcome the problem and so that you will not have to use potentially harmful pharmaceutical medications. I’ve pretty much always subscribed to the R.I.C.E (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) theory to treat an injury – but what about if you’re in the middle of an ultra-endurance event, your support crew is half a day away and you need to keep going before it gets dark.

Or what if you have 60 students booked in for a martial arts seminar and they want to see you in action – not the right time to say, ’sorry, I seemed to have a cramp and want some ice’.
And not the time to stop and put your feet up.
Says Sports Nutritionist and Trainer Richard Renton on the subject of hot and cold treatment, ‘If you’re done for the event then putting an ice pack on the muscle and alternating with a hot pack is fine. However if you’re going to continue to perform, then keep the muscle as warm as possible.
If you want to continue to perform and put ice on an injury and keep using it, then during a performance you’re going to create more damage – so applying heat is the thing to do.
After an event, I like to apply ice for the first three hours and then alternate with heat, depending on the extent of the injury – to help with recovery’.
Eastern medicine certainly agrees with this approach with it’s use of moxa, acupressure and acupuncture techniques designed to stimulate blood flow (and generate heat) to an area.
The best advice for runners, sports people and anyone who suffers cramps at night is to have a tube arnica gel, tiger balm or ‘CM Cream’ on hand as part of a treatment plan to keep you going.
When I am teaching or training other people I always have a small pot of tiger balm on hand. I’ve found in the case of cramp that once you have squeezed and then stretched the muscle to get it going, a little tiger balm will help increase the blood flow to the affected area.
This cramp relief tactic of applying heat to the area before ice also seems to reduce recovery time. After the event is complete and it’s time to really rest the muscle, follow up with ice treatment.

After you race or train you peel the paper off and rub the ice on your cramped muscle and it’s an effective and inexpensive way to ice down.
For heat, tiger balm, arnica and CM cream are lightweight and easy to carry in a running pouch, can be purchased commercially for a reasonable price and will act as a lubricant for massage and to assist with initial stretch and recovery in the event of a cramp.

Great, but how was I going to get that extra potassium? Okay, time to do more research. Well, to make a long story short, I discovered that bananas are an excellent source of potassium. Well, I wasn’t a big fruit eater, but I was willing to try anything. So, I started to eat bananas regularly. As a result, I haven’t had a night leg cramp since.
Now, there are other contributing factors to night leg cramps that most experts DO agree on such as muscle overexertion, prolonged sitting, dehydration, pregnancy, diabetes, Parkinson’s Disease, alcohol use and certain medications. But potassium is the one thing they say will make the biggest difference.
So go to the supermarket and pick yourself up a bunch. I think you’ll find a great improvement in your night leg cramps.
