Use of some specific medications can also be the cause of leg cramps in some people. Drugs may also worsen the situation for those who are already affected by frequent leg cramps. How to Prevent Leg Cramps in Bed?

In case of leg cramps in bed, you have to be careful about the sleeping posture. Muscle Cramp:
A muscle cramp is an involuntarily and forcibly contracted muscle that does not relax. There are varieties of causes and types of muscle cramp. Numerous medicines also can cause muscle cramps. Most of the muscle cramps can be stopped if the muscle can be stretched. Muscle cramps can be prevented also.
Foot and Leg Cramps
Cramps can occur in a skeletal muscle, but are common in legs, feet and muscles that cross two joints (e.g.: the calf muscle).
Cramps can involve part of a muscle or all the muscles in a group.
The most commonly affected muscle groups are:
(1) Back of leg/calf (gastrocnemius)
(2) Back of thigh (hamstrings)
(3) Front of thigh (quadriceps)
(4) Feet, hands, arms and abdomen.
The intensity of muscle cramps ranges from slight to severe pain. A cramp feels rock hard and last for a few seconds to several minutes or longer. It is common for cramps to ease up and then return several times before they go away entirely.
Causes:
The exact cause is not known, but experts think that it is related to poor flexibility of muscles, muscle fatigue or doing new activities. Other factors such as dehydration, depletion of electrolytes (potassium, sodium, calcium or magnesium), injuries, and inflammation and nerve damage can cause cramps. Cramps are more common during exercise in the heat because sweat contain fluid as well as electrolytes. When these nutrients fall below a certain level, the incidents of muscle spasms increase.
Athletes are more likely to get cramps when the body is not conditioned and therefore subject to fatigue. Cramps often develop near the end of intense or prolonged exercise or the night after at nighttime.
Treatment of Muscle cramp:
Muscle cramps usually go away without treatment. However if it persists then:
(1) Stop the activity that causes cramp.
(2) Gently stretch and massage the cramping muscle.
(3) Hold the joint in a stretched position until the cramp stops.
Prevention:
(1)Improve fitness and avoid muscle fatigue.
(2) Warm up regularly before exercise and stretch after it.
(3) Stretch the calf muscle.
(4) Stretch the hamstring muscle.
(5) Stretch the quadriceps muscle.
Leg cramps:
Leg cramps or spasms are a painful tightening of the muscles in the leg. Staying bed for long periods of time also can cause leg or foot cramps. Leg cramps can be recognized by the sudden pain or discomfort in a leg or foot and a tight or stiff feeling. Nocturnal night cramps occur during the night or while at rest. The cramps can affect persons of any age group, but they occur mostly in middle aged and older people. The exact cause of night cramps has not identified by the researchers. The problem is most likely with nerves controlling the muscles rather than with the muscles themselves.
Causes:
The cramps are caused by overexertion of muscles, structural disorders, standing on concrete, prolonged sitting, inappropriate leg positions, or dehydration. Less common causes include diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, hypoglycemia, anemia, thyroid, endocrine disorders and use of some medications. Low levels of certain minerals known as electrolytes have been linked to leg cramps. Certain drugs, pregnant women and dialysis patients often complain of leg cramps.
Treatment:
(1) When cramping occurs, try walking on the affected leg and elevate it.
(2) Stretch your calf by grabbing toes and pulling them upward towards your knee, especially with your leg extended straight.
(3) Take a hot shower bath or apply an ice massage to the cramped muscle.
Persistent or severe cramps are often treated with medication
Prevention:
To prevent cramping consider a regular use of electrolytes. Stretching your calves regularly during the day and at night will help. Prevent night cramps by stretching you calf muscles with wall pushups and applying a heating pad for ten minutes before going to bed. Keeping the blanket loose at the foot will prevent unnatural positioning of your feet which can cause night cramps.
Foot cramps:
A Foot cramp is the tightening or painful contraction in the middle of the foot and tries to crush the foot in a kind of vice. In many cases, the deep muscles in the foot actually knot up and contract.
(1) An overworked foot can be susceptible to foot cramps.
(2) Poor circulation of oxygen being carried to the foot.
(3) Lack of potassium.
(4) Dehydration.
(5) Changing hormone levels.
(6) Pinched nerves- caused when the electrical impulse from the brain cannot reach the muscles.
(7) Alcohol or tobacco use
(8) Nutritional deficiency.
(9) Environmental toxicity such as poison from factories, contaminated water.
(10) Chemical sensitivity.
Treatment:
(1) Slowly pull the foot away from the cramping position and
hold it there until the foot cramp disappears. Massage the foot for 5 to 10 minutes until feels better.
(2) Take a dose of aspirin or ibuprofen to relieve foot cramp.
(3) Elevate your foot to the level of your waist.
(4) Use moist heat on the foot cramp three times a day if it is chronic.
(5) Soak the foot in warm water.
(6) If necessary wrap the foot in an elastic bandage.
(7) If it is an athletic injury, apply ice pack but not directly.
(8) Stay off your foot and give a chance to heal.
(9) See a doctor if it is chronic.

If you’ve ever experienced the excruciating pain of muscle cramps, then understanding some of the causes and ways to relief can go a long way towards being more comfortable and pain free. I speak from the experience of muscle cramps so I investigated the causes and what could be done to relieve this terrible pain.
Muscle Cramps: Understanding Some of the Causes and Ways to Pain Relief
For some people muscle spasms are so frequent that it’s impossible to sleep until the pain can be relieved as they can come on during the night.
For others they can be less frequent but just as painful. Traveling by car, bus, airline or other means for extended periods without a ‘walking’ break, can results in the leg muscles contracting into painful spasms which are very difficult to relieve. Ensure you get up and move around regularly when traveling.
Many women experience abdominal cramping ranging from discomfort to absolutely excruciating pain that drains all the energy from your body during menstruation. To understand what is happening here the uterus lining thickens during the early part of the menstrual cycle. The lining then breaks down and is expelled which is part of the normal monthly menstrual cycle.
During this process prostaglandins (which are unsaturated carboxylic acids that act as chemical messengers) are released and send a message to the uterus to contract. These contractions help to expel the uterus lining but they can also cause severe pain, and are sometimes so intense they momentarily cut off the blood supply.
My experience has been with leg, back and abdominal cramps but the leg cramps were the absolute worst. Cramps can start in your toes, distorting the shape, and moving up into the calf muscles, tightening into painful knots where it is impossible to lie still or to walk. Some muscle spasms can come from injured muscles particularly in the back where they try to protect themselves from further damage.
Dietary deficiencies in magnesium and calcium (which work in synergy) can also be a cause of some cramps, muscle weakness, leg tremors and muscle spasms. These minerals play an important role in controlling contraction and relaxation of muscles on signals from the brain. This was my own problem and I found powdered magnesium with calcium had a faster absorption rate and was a more efficient means of preventing cramps .
Insufficient intake of water and other fluids, resulting in dehydration, is also another cause of cramping and spasms. Athletes are painfully aware of this and the need for keeping up fluid intake. As our bodies are made up of a massive amount of water, it is important for all of us, not just athletes, to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day – a glass being 8 oz. It is also important to be aware of dehydrating and this can be simply tested by noting if there’s color in the urine, drink more water – coffee and alcohol dehydrate, so when partaking of either of these have water at the same time. The same applies if diarrhea is present, during hot weather, or if using diuretics.
What to do to relieve cramping. Gently stretch the muscle to attempt to relax it. Then gently and carefully massage the affected areas. Don’t overdo stretching or the massage as this could cause more pain or damage to the muscles. I have found when leg cramps leave soreness in the muscles, a hot pack or wheat bag heated in the microwave and applied to those parts will loosen up the muscles and relieve the soreness.

We have a body that is full of muscles from the tops of our heads to the tips of our toes and it is a real marvel that they all manage to work so wonderfully well most of the time.
When we use our muscles that can be controlled voluntarily (arms and legs), they contract and relax alternately as we move our arms and legs. Similarly, the muscles that support our head, neck, neck and trunk are synchronized to hold our posture. When a muscle or just a few fibers of it that contracts involuntarily, it is called a spasm, and if this is forceful and sustained, it turns into a cramp.

Contractures: Results when the muscles of the leg are unable to relax. The constant spasms are cause by a depletion of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), an energy chemical within the cell. This prevents muscle fiber relaxation. The nerves are inactive in the form of muscle spam. Contractures can be inherited or acquired.

Leg cramps usually occur at night or after an exercise session or from exertion. This can even lead to lactic-acid buildup.
You should try to flex your toes to ease a cramp. Breathing deeply and relaxing at the same time also helps to give relief from leg cramps. As oxygen is taken through the muscles the cramp releases and you can slowly massage the leg. You should try massaging toward the heart so that you drain the lymph. This will also help in the increased circulation and blood flow to the muscles.

Growing Pains In Children, Sleepless Nights

Does your child complain of achy legs? If he is not sick or does not have a fever, he may have growing pains.
Growing pains are muscle aches children experience in their legs, usually late in the day and at night.
Child Leg Pain: It May Be Growing Pains
They typically occur between the ages of 3 to12 years of age or typically around a growth spurt period. It is not a disease, nor is there evidence that the process of bone growth causes pain. However, growing pains tend to cease when children stop growing. By the teenage years growing pains seem to stop.
Growing pains is thought to occur in 1/3 of all children. Usually the pain is in the front of the thigh, the calf muscles, and muscles behind the knee. Growing pains almost always occur in both legs.
Some physicians believe growing pains occur because children are very active and hard on their musculoskeletal systems while they are still growing. It is thought children experience growing pains at night due to the overuse of the muscles during the day. The pains usually start right before bedtime. However, some kids go to bed without any pain only to be awakened in the middle of night with aches. The pains normally go away by morning.
Growing pains usually can be relieved by daily stretching exercises and massages. Stretch the muscle by pushing the foot and toes upward as far as they will go and then gently massage the calf and upper thigh muscles. A moist heating pad may also help. Do this a few times a day. Continue the exercises even after the pain subsides in order to keep the muscles relaxed.
Some physicians suggest giving a glass of tonic water (quinine) before bed. While I do not know of any studies regarding its effectiveness, it won’t hurt to give tonic water a try.
Make sure your child is getting enough calcium, iron and potassium. Also make sure he is drinking plnty of fluids. This can help avoid any cramping associated with the pains.
Give your child ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others). Aspirin should be avoided in young children because of Reyes syndrome.
Call your doctor if:
If it happens every night it may be due to restless legs syndrome (RLS), a condition in which your legs feel extremely uncomfortable while you’re sitting or lying down.
Swollen joints which are hot to the touch or red and tender
Pain is in only one leg, limping
Movement increases the pain

Is Soap A Cure For Night Leg Cramps?
If you are reading this article, I can guess that you suffer from painful night leg cramps .

I’m sure that you have probably purchased a few different medications that promise to put an end to your leg cramps, and you have probably read countless amounts of information about how to prevent the cramps as well.
The first thing that I noticed while doing my research is that the cause is unknown. There are a few different circumstances that are suspected to lead towards nocturnal leg cramps, but nothing is set in stone. This tells me that there can not possibly be an effective medication out there, if they cant even figure out what causes the cramping in the first place!
Household Soap – The Cure For Night Leg Cramps
Now, before I go any further, I want to let you know my stance on home remedies . Honestly, I am a believer in technology, and usually do not trust those ancient home remedies. I would rather buy something that is scientifically proven than do some voodoo to fix my problems. My problems; however, could not be fixed by the different medications that I took, so I decided to give a few remedies a try.
After soaking in a hot bathtub before going to sleep (did not feel too good on my legs), drinking a lot of water (cause me to wake up for other reasons during the night), and sleeping with a bar of soap (which I thought was crazy), the only remedy that actually worked was sleeping with a bar of soap!
Don’t worry, I don’t think your spouse will get jealous… just slide a bar of soap under your sheets at the foot of your bed, and prepare for a full nights rest! The very first time that I put this bar of soap under my bed, I did not wake up once with night leg cramps!
Whether you believe in home remedies or not, please give this a try. I am sure that you will be very happy with the results, just as a few of my friends have been. You don’t have anything to lose except restless nights!

Leg And Foot Cramps In Bed
We’ve all experienced them; a deep sleep is suddenly painfully interrupted by one of those excruciating, involuntary contractions of the calf muscles. These highly stressful night leg cramps occur without warning and can also happen whilst awake.

They can be both alarming and if in the company of someone new, a little embarrassing! One of the surest ways to put out the flames of desire is to experience cramping during sex. One minute writhing in heated passion, the next writhing in agony!
The night leg cramps can affect persons in any age-group, but they tend to occur in middle-aged and older populations. Research has not identified precisely what causes night leg cramps, but the problem is most likely with the nerves controlling the muscles rather than with the muscles themselves.
Sometimes the night leg cramps are caused by overexertion of the muscles, structural disorders (flat feet), standing on concrete, prolonged sitting, inappropriate leg positions while sedentary, or dehydration. Low levels of certain minerals, such as magnesium, sodium and calcium have regularly been linked to the cramps.

Muscle cramps range in intensity from a slight tic to agonising pain. A cramping muscle may feel hard to the touch and/or appear visibly distorted or twitch beneath the skin.
