There are no such definite causes of nighttime leg cramps, however, based on assumptions and possibilities, there are some cases that have been linked with these cramps. These include overuse or overexertion of muscles, sitting in the same place for a long period of time or sitting in an improper posture and dehydration. Being dehydrated is considered as one of the causes of cramps generally, as there is not enough water for transporting vitamins, minerals and other substances throughout the body.
Leg cramps while sleeping have been found to be common among expecting mothers and elderly, probably due to poor blood circulation in their limbs. People with a sedentary lifestyle are also vulnerable to leg cramps and they become prone to this disease if they do not maintain enough consumption of water for the body to remain hydrated. Nocturnal leg cramps have also been found common among people who have deficiencies of calcium, potassium and magnesium.
Certain medical conditions such as diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, Parkinson’s disease, endocrine disorders and medications such as contraceptive pills (birth control pills) have also been hold responsible for the occurrence of leg cramping at night.

It has been found that people suffering from leg cramps and spasms increased the level of potassium in their diet and seemed to have reduced the frequency of cramps. Restless Legs Syndrome Causes
Did you ever go to sleep at night and about two hours into your restful sleep you suddenly awaken only to find that your legs are twitching like crazy? And then suddenly the aches and leg cramps start. These cramps can be so severe that it feels like somebody is digging a knife into your calves.
Well, if you’ve suffered, or are suffering with these symptoms, what you have is restless leg syndrome. The attacks can come at any time. And while this seems like a problem that just won’t go away, there are natural treatments for this condition that will rid you of your restless leg syndrome for good. But first, we need to understand what causes it.

What Causes Leg Cramps
Although night leg cramps are quite a common occurrence their cause is still a matter of debate and can be the result of different causes at various times.
Yet there are a few common themes, such as doing too much stretching too quickly or prolonged sitting or in response to deficiencies in diet or certain side effects of some drugs. It is also believed that cramps can occur as a symptom or side effect of cetain diseases like diabetes, hypoglycemia, arteriosclerosis or an underactive thyroid gland.
Other suggested causes include problems such as poor circulation where the muscle isn’t receiving a good blood supply or enough oxygen, a pinched nerve or cramping as the result of an injury.

Leg cramps can also be quite common during pregnancy and this is oftenbecause of the added weight being borne by the legs, or the muscles becoming more tired than they would normally pre-pregnancy or a mineral deficiency as more is used up for the growing foetus. Regular cramping seems to be relieved by making sure you take enough moderate exercise and doing some stretching, increasing your intake of essential minerals and vitamins, making sure you drink plenty of water and stay well hydrated and relaxing the muscles with massage or a warm bath. Sometimes when the cramping is severe and persistent, quinine is suggested as a treatment but this may involve unpleasant side effects such as dizziness or blurred vision.

The worst ones are the inner thigh cramps. They are crippling; and then the muscles are sore for days afterward. I think I get them when I am dehydrated. The “pinching the skin under the nose” trick has not helped me so far.
5 miles later I got a small cramp in my inner thigh. This frustrates me because I’ve done lots of 12 hour days of climbing and hiking and have never had problems with cramping. I’m sure that you have probably purchased a few different medications that promise to put an end to your leg cramps, and you have probably read countless amounts of information about how to prevent the cramps as well.
The first thing that I noticed while doing my research is that the cause is unknown. There are a few different circumstances that are suspected to lead towards nocturnal leg cramps, but nothing is set in stone. This tells me that there can not possibly be an effective medication out there, if they cant even figure out what causes the cramping in the first place!
Household Soap – The Cure For Night Leg Cramps
Now, before I go any further, I want to let you know my stance on home remedies . Honestly, I am a believer in technology, and usually do not trust those ancient home remedies. I would rather buy something that is scientifically proven than do some voodoo to fix my problems. My problems; however, could not be fixed by the different medications that I took, so I decided to give a few remedies a try.
After soaking in a hot bathtub before going to sleep (did not feel too good on my legs), drinking a lot of water (cause me to wake up for other reasons during the night), and sleeping with a bar of soap (which I thought was crazy), the only remedy that actually worked was sleeping with a bar of soap!
Don’t worry, I don’t think your spouse will get jealous… just slide a bar of soap under your sheets at the foot of your bed, and prepare for a full nights rest! The very first time that I put this bar of soap under my bed, I did not wake up once with night leg cramps!
Whether you believe in home remedies or not, please give this a try. I am sure that you will be very happy with the results, just as a few of my friends have been. You don’t have anything to lose except restless nights!

You never used to get leg cramps (until recently), you run regularly and exercise for two hours a day or more, you’re fit, you’ve got a ‘6 pack stomach’ – so you can eat anything you like, within reason, right?

It just doesn’t work like that – let me explain using the ‘elastic band theory of health and longevity’ to explain why you’re starting to get leg cramps, muscle cramps and other health problems that are sure to follow.
The body is just like a wonderful machine – so good in fact that for over 30 to 40 years, no matter how ‘low grade’ the ‘fuel’ you put in, your body just works and works and works.
In fact, some people find that as they hit their mid thirties, that they’re just as fast as in their early twenties. Sure, you’re putting on a little weight, that’s normal, but overall you find that you’re just as fast and don’t need to train as often or as hard.
That is until one day you start getting cramps that won’t go away, or you can’t put up with that joint pain like you used to or your blood pressure starts to rise, or you need glasses or your hair starts going grey – fast.

Prevention of cramps and other health challenges from a nutrition point of view comes down to consuming a mostly fresh food diet that is high in minerals, avoiding ‘empty’ foods that are high in sugar and low in minerals and which also introduce toxins and antibiotics into our systems.
Fast foods of any type, fried food, processed or refined carbohydrates (such as cakes, biscuits and most types of bread), alcohol and excessive amounts of caffeine are all examples of foods to avoid.
In terms of cramping, eating the wrong food does the following:
1.Reduces our muscles’ energy reserves and makes cramping more likely
2.Deprives the muscles of minerals required to relax and contract the muscles.
3.Introduces toxins (preservatives, food colouring and flavour enhancers) that have a stimulatory effect on the muscles that induce cramping and tend to inhibit the relaxation response that prevents cramping.
And while muscle cramps, running cramps you suffer during exercise and leg cramps at night are the end result of these nutritional problems, it’s the other lifestyle-threatening and life-threatening conditions you should be worried about.
My advice – cramps are just indicators of potentially more serious health problems. Fix the cramps from a nutritional point of view and you’re taking positive action from a long term health and longevity perspective.
